Last night I was able to see two of the festival shows:
ON AIR is an exciting take on a quite irregular radio host. Starring Jenna Horton, a multidisciplinary artist originally from Denver, CO. In Philly she has most recently worked with Gas & Electric Arts, Headlong Dance Theatre, and Born Lucky Studios on the short film Upstairs. The piece is in the musky basement of fellow artist Caitlin Hellerer and you discover the simple, yet exciting "man den" of Jenna's character. The solo piece is full of hilarious awkward comedy moments and the audience is eased into the intrigue of a lonely radio announcer trying to manage his daily program. It is an extremely entertaining piece as he interacts with the white noise of radio and his one companion, his judgemental dog. Jenna explains her show as, "Dank, moldy, mothball places under your armpits where shame grows."
I really hope you get to check out ON AIR in the next week.
Following Jenna's piece was Caitlin Hellerer's work. Caitlin is a local dancer who has recently performed pieces by David Brick, Marcel Williams Foster, Makoto Hirano, Olive Price Dance, and Headlong Performance Institute. Caitlin's show was not what I expected because her original idea of The Belle and the Ball was not to be seen, she explains in her pre-show. However, in the excitement of SoLow Caitlin still created an awesome and unique video installation. In her exploration of recorded video she discovered and shares a mind-bending work. I honestly do not want to give too much away of her piece because it is in the unexpected that the piece came to life for me. Caitlin's video short follows Jenna's ON AIR as a double feature so you won't miss out.
Hope you will check out these shows and I will have more info on other shows in the next few days.
